2011 - It's going to be an amazing year!

With every new year Paul and I look back and ask, "How are we going to beat this?" We have simply been blessed. Even though we were lucky to spend maybe five or six weeks together out of the fifty-two that there are in a year we really had a great year.

2010 Recap
-January 2010 Paul and Alexys moved to Wilsonville, Oregon. Alexys started Junior High since that's how they roll in Oregon.
-February 2010 Chandler and I flew down to spend Valentine's day with Paul and Alexys. We had a great time even though it was really rainy. Chandler and I went to the Oregon Coast for the first time!
-March 2010 Paul and Alexys went to Crab Feed 2010 in Halfway, Oregon. Tons of fun!!
-April 2010 Chandler and I went to Portland to spend Spring Break as a family. So much fun! Under Sea Garden's, OSI
-May 2010 Paul and Alexys came home the last week of May! Alexys moved back home since school was out for the summer.
-June 2010 We had lots of company early on, visits from family and friends while Paul was in town. It was so nice. Got Alexys settled back in to her room and started our summer out.
-July 2010 We spend the 4th of July Weekend camping in Summit Creek (outside of Halfway, OR) with our family. It was so nice to get together and see everyone and camping was good. Watched Halfway Fireworks from the hillside. Amazing.
-August 2010 Chandler had a blast playing soccer. Chandler turned 11 and Paul had his first birthday away. Still all in all it was a good time. Started preparing for school.
-September 2010 Paul was home to watch Chandler's soccer game! He made sure he got to see him play a couple of games! Both kids started school. Chandler started 5th grade and Alexys started 7th grade at the brand new middle school! We did the JDRF Fundraising and Walk as a family - Paul even made it back in town to hang out with us!
-October 2010 Was lots of long hours working and preparing for winter. I went and saw Thriller for the first time with my mom and sisters! It was amazing. Great bonding time. The kids had fun out in the rain getting candy - my sister came over and passed out all of ours. Was amazing. We also found Journey in early October and started building some amazing friendships.
-November 2010 We gave thanks. Paul was home for a whole week. We had a great time entertaining friends and family for the holiday season.
-December 2010 Well I turned 29. Alexys turned 13 and Paul was home for a week and a half! We got Christmas and New Year's together. Entertained like crazy, met new friends and had an amazing time. We ended 2010 with a bang! Invited some friends over and did a dinner party, sat by the fire, played games and poker. So much fun!!!

Even though our time together was limited this last year - every minute we had together was quality and new fun experiences together. I think that our family has a new found appreciation for closeness and time together and we value our relationships even more.

So to answer the question that we come across each year. "How do we make this year better than last?" Just wait and see! We are excited for 2011 and the different challenges that may come and changes in our future. We never know what or when but we are ready for whatever God has in store for us!

Thankful

What a week. So if you didn't know I have been very sick for the last week. I simply don't do sick well. This time - I even listened to the doctor - normally I just continue on and work, work away. This time I took the time off like the doctor suggested and I did nothing but sleep all week! Thank goodness for Netflix!

During this time of being sick I also had plenty of time on my hands too. I realized how blessed I am. Alexys has been the biggest help ever and made me soup several days in a row. Chandler kept covering me up when ever he saw that I had thrown my blanket off and Paul - even though he is a thousand miles away called often to check on me. I am so blessed to have such an amazing family. To top it all off - I have amazingly caring and supportive friends! Many phone calls and Dr Peppers came my way and I so appreciate all of them!

Today I just want to tell my friends and family how thankful I am that they are in my life. Each relationships build stronger and stronger - I love how friendships and relationships grow. I am simply thankful for all of the people God has brought into my life and the new life journey of discovery I have begun. Each day is new and exciting - I love it!!

Helpful Resources/Medical Insurance Information

We all know that we are still in a tough economy and our families still struggle to provide. Today I wanted to put together some helpful information to share with all of my friends as we all prepare for the holidays. Personally, I didn't know about these resources till a friend told a friend who told a friend who told me. So I guess now its my turn to pass this information to you! :)

First is COMMUNITY FOOD CO-OP OF UTAH https://foodco-op.net/
**** IMPORTANT **** This is a monthly order program and the last day to order for November is tomorrow Friday, November 5, 2010
 - The best thing about this program is the only thing you need to qualify is to eat! How hard is that?? Of course they ask for whatever donations you can provide since they are a non profit and occasionally they will also request that you volunteer to help/support the program too but that's not too hard either and there are plenty of opportunities! This is a monthly program where you can order as you need and the quality of food is just as fresh and sometimes more fresh than the grocery store. For more info check out their web page https://foodco-op.net/
--------------------------------
Next - HEAT through Commuity Action Program - Please go to http://www.communityactionprovo.org/pdf/HEAT%20Brochure.pdf to see the flyer. This flyer has income limits and additional information on telephone assistance programs and other info that may be needed. Now if you qualify income wise they will assist you with a portion of your power and or gas bill. Check and see if your eligible. You just might be! If so - I suggest that you call and make an appointment. We all can use just a little bit of help!
---------------------------------
Health Insurance
We all need access to health insurance and I know - its SUPER expensive. However it costs twice as much when the kids fall and break something - which is what happened to me a couple of years ago when I was without insurance for 2 months. ICK! So here is some  GREAT NEWS! There are 2 programs that have special enrollment periods PCN (Primary Care Network) and CHIP (Children's Health Insurance Program) There are income limits for both of these programs.
 - PCN will open enrollment for all adults November 8-22, 2010. If you are uninsured and age 19-64, you may qualify for PCN. Please go to http://health.utah.gov/pcn/ for more information.
 - CHIP has continuous open enrollment right now. Please view information at http://health.utah.gov/chip/
Both of these are great programs for those who don't have health insurance. You also can always apply for medicaid and or food stamps at https://utahhelps.utah.gov/ more information at http://jobs.utah.gov/
--------------------------------------
With Christmas quickly approaching 211 and the United Way both have several programs for holiday help for families in need here are the web pages you can go to and find additional information.  www.unitedwayuc.org/find_help/211.htm or http://www.211ut.org/

I hope these resources with be helpful to families with the tough economy and the holiday's fast approaching. God Bless

All About Alexys

Alexys is my beautiful daughter. She was born December 18th of 1997 which means she is almost 13 years old. Scary! She has been one of the greatest joys of my life and also the biggest pain possible. I think the later is just because she is just as head strong as her mother.

Alexys' favorite color is baby blue. She loves to dance, sing and cheer her heart out. She is so bright, cheerful and so much fun! She is so outgoing and has an amazing personality and is simply unmistakable. I could sit here and go on and on about the amazing person she has become. I am so proud of her lately that I could burst!

I just got Alexys' report card last week - was absolutely tickled pink! She earned 6 A's and 2 B's!!!!! She has a full plate however hardly complains about school. She always stays on top of her school work and usually uses her free time at school to make sure all of her homework is done before she gets home. It amazes me the amount of responsibility she has learned and applies to her daily life. She really has done well with problem-solving when she has issues and sadly for me never really needs my help.

Funny - OK more so interesting story - Alexys was struggling with the FISH Concept in her Pre-Algebra class. She asked me about it... I asked to see her book. Well come to find out Vista has decided not to use Math Books this year. (me) WHAT?!?!?! So I called the school and they confirmed that the lessons are explained in class and if the child misses a class they must set up a time to have the instruction after class or they must use their flex time to get help. Again - I was a little frustrated. I loved math and received straight A's in all of my math classes including college courses however without a book to know what the heck she was talking about... I was totally at a loss. Now - Alexys could have given up - she could have waited to figure it out in class the next day.... BUT - Alexys took control of the situation and wasn't going to let my memory relapse get her down and called around until she found a close neighbor who was also taking the same Pre-Algebra class and asked for some tutoring assistance. I was so stinking proud of her! She totally found a solution to the problem and didn't let it get her down. AND she was able to figure out the concept that she needed and aced her test too!

Parents always go on and on about all of the good - there is also challenges in any and all parent child relationships. Alexys and I butt heads ALL the time. For 7 years I was a single parent; working full-time and attending college 3/4 time taking lots of online classes so that I was at least home and not away. Alexys has never had a problem standing up and being in charge - and when she was little we had several challenges with her brother. Alexys has always been glad to help - however as she has gotten older the mini mommy thing has gotten old and she can be pretty mean and bossy to her brother. But with all of the negativity there is always greener grass on the other side.

Alexys is amazingly domesticated. She can cook just about anything as long as she has a recipe or clear instructions. She usually even cleans the pans when she is done (she has passed all of the other dishes on to her younger brother!) She can bake just about anything - except for pie crusts (we both gave up one day after trying 4 different times.) Honestly - I don't know if there is anything she can't do. Cooking, cleaning, laundry - she even irons! - I don't even do that!

Babysitting - Oh my heck she is such a good sitter! A couple of friends and a neighbor have had Alexys babysit. They all rave about how much they love her. Apparently she feeds, baths, tucks in and reads to the kids and they are in bed and the house is clean before the parents arrive home. I want a day of this for me!! LOL Its funny - when she is babysitting later at night I worry and like to check in on her often. It is so stinking cute - okay it wasn't the first time - but when I call she sends my call straight to voicemail. Then she texts me that she is putting the kids down and she will call me when she is available. (Me) What?!? I am your mom! (Her) Mom, I am working and will call you when I am not busy. Later she calls and she is whispering....  (me) is everything okay? (her) mom, I don't like to use my phone unless its the parents - everything is fine. I will call you if I need something.  Again - I am so not needed because she thinks she is all grown up! So just because I thought she was on her phone and just being a peel - checked her phone records online.... no incoming or outgoing texts or calls except from me.... Hmmmm She so does take her job seriously! I so appreciate that and think that the parents she babysits for probably do to. She totally makes the kids a priority - which she totally should - but this just makes me that much more proud of a momma. I am so blessed to have such an amazing kids. Such a good kid - what in the world to do with her.

Okay - enough about Alexys for tonight...maybe tomorrow can be about Chandler.

All about Paul

So my husband has an amazing job working for a construction management company. He does a lot of high tech projects and has recently been adding broadband projects to his list.

On New Year's Day we as a family packed up my husband and the 5th wheel travel trailer so that Paul could start his traveling work adventures. He drove far too many hours and decided that Portland, Oregon was not a great place to try and drive a travel trailer around during rush hour traffic. LOL He settled in Wilsonville, Oregon at a really nice RV Resort which was about 30 minutes or so from his job site in Hillsboro, Oregon. Just a couple of weeks later Paul came home for this first home visit - Alexys was devastated without her daddy so he took her back with him. The two of them lived as happy as could be in the trailer from January through June. We decided that it would be best to have her home for the summer (which ended up being permanent :)

We all had some amazing travels throughout the Spring and Summer back and forth from Oregon to Utah. In September Paul was moved to a different job site in Bend, Oregon - still not close enough to home for me :) I keep telling him that he has become such a super star that they are never going to let him leave Oregon.

Paul is going on month 11 of working away from home. It is never easy and we all miss each other like crazy!! We are hoping that sometime this Spring the company he works for will have opportunities to do a couple of jobs here in Salt Lake or in Lehi, Utah. All We can do is hope and pray for the best cause it would sure be nice to all be under one roof for more than a couple of weekends a year.

Paul enjoys playing his bass - he can listen to just about any song then just start playing right along. It is so amazing. He is also an amazing cook. In our home - when he is home - Paul is the cook. He can cook anything and everything. Some of our favorites are: One Pan Breakfast (potatoes, onions, bacon, sausage, peppers, garlic and anything else he can find to throw in there); Fajitas, Salmon, Halibut (I miss him cooking the fish!); He also makes some yummy hot butter rum. Paul can make a meal out of just about anything - its great! He also enjoys archery, hunting, shooting, riding ATVs, hanging out with the family and supporting his children. Paul is also good at building anything and everything - he can build from the ground up and has very patiently taught me how to do alot which with him gone I really appreciate.

So I know this is totally scattered but that is the best part of this being my blog! I can write whatever - however I want!

So Paul and I met online January 2006 and decided to meet in person in February 2006. We have simply been together since. He is so understanding and such an amazing person to have been able to walk into the mess of a family that I had at the time and totally take the kids in as his own. He has taught both of them so much and has helped teach and mold them into the wonderful kids that they are! In February 2007 I became impatient and right about our 1 year dating anniversary we went to this concert in Nephi, Utah... I remember we were sitting there on the balcony waiting for the band to start and I was thinking ... I thought for sure he was going to propose during our romantic dinner or at some other point during the night and was a little disappointed that he hadn't yet. So.... I DID! And thankfully he said 'YES'!!

June 2007 - Paul and I married in Richland, Oregon on his Father's Ranch. I couldn't have thought of a more perfect place however it really would have been nicer being an outdoor wedding without all of the wind. Anyhow - pretty funny that I am ending this post of my sweet hubby with the beginning of us. I miss him like crazy and sure hope that his job will soon bring him back home for a while. Well that's enough for tonight - maybe tomorrow I will write about one of the kids.... hmmm....

State of Utah Jobs

Many friends and family members have asked how to find out what positions are available with the State of Utah. I always say that I will email or forward them the information. Okay - so here is the honesty - I forget! All the time!!! I honestly and truly am trying to be helpful when I tell people that there is an online job board that lists all of the State of Utah's jobs and that you can search by agency or position - I really mean to follow up but don't all of the time. Love me anyway!

You can go to https://jobs.utah.gov/ to search jobs with the state. You do have to create an account to submit for jobs and want to be sure you have an electronic version of your resume. Be prepared to copy and paste because some jobs ask questions regarding your work history but don't want the full resume online.... others want you to copy and past or use the resume tool to submit your information. Best of luck in your job searches!!!

Masks

At church on Sunday the pastor at the church I recently started attending was discussing masks. He point out that when you go to the store or interact with friends, family, neighbors or strangers that people automatically respond to questions without really being honest.

When someone asks how I am I give the standard response that I am fine, great or okay. In reality I am so not any of those things. I am stressed, irritated and just simply trying to get by. It is amazing how good it feels to just be honest! Not that I was previously being deceptive but its amazing how much we try to sugar coat or hide pieces of our lives.

Mortgage Fact

So I am in the process of attempting to refinance our home. We purchased our home 18 months ago and over the last 18 months have been making extra payments of $50-200 each month so that we can get our loan balance down. The quicker the better right? WRONG! After talking to my lender/financial advisor (of which I have had the same one for 4 years) I found out that since mortgage rates vary and so do home values that it is better to put your extra money in savings, preferable a money market savings as you can earn more interest in the money market verses a regular savings account. This I never knew!

We were also looking at the cost to refinance the house and were debating if it is worth it, we already have a low rate of 6.37 so we really wanted to wait for the rates to go below 6% to refi because no matter which way we look at it closing costs will be approximately $2500. But we have PMI (Principal Mortgage Insurance) that we are required to pay until our home value drops below 80% of the home value. We are currently at 90% but it would take an arm and a leg to get it below that 80% quick. So long story short we are looking at switching to an FHA loan which will cut our mortgage insurance in more than 1/2 and at at 6% rate we will save $150+ per month. Over a year that is a ton of money... but we have been hanging on to paying the $2500 closing costs... and debated paying them in cash to save the amount of our loan by $2500 but be found out that the difference in payment will be a couple of dollars per month and we found that all of our closing costs again will be tax deductible! So in all - we are waiting for trusty Jim to give us a call as soon as the rates are 6% or less to start our refinance process. In all that min. $150 savings each month adds up to over $1800 a year which we have decided that we can stick into a Roth IRA for Paul so that we can make our later retirement slightly more cushy!

Anyhow - new information to me - mortgages sometimes are hard to figure out and new info is always great so I felt it important to share my new info. Have a great day!

PDD NOS - Info - Vent

Okay - for all who didn't know before - Chandler was diagnosed when he was 3 or 4 with PDD-NOS which falls under an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. As if this is not all confusing enough all by itself. For a long time we had a village of doctors that have seen Chandler since he was 3 years old and they have supported me as a parent for all of this time while diagnosing Chandler and assisting me with finding ways to learn, deal and understand him.

He continued to see these doctors when several appointments were postponed about 2 years ago because of family vacations, planning the wedding, selling and buying a new home... then when Paul and I were married June 2007 I found out that Chandler lost his SSI due to Paul's income counting since we were married, then I found out that he also lost Medicaid because he lost his SSI. So the whirlwind was pretty overwhelming and I simply haven't done anything for the last 18 months because after several phone calls to my insurance provider I found that none of his village of doctors were covered by my insurance so - long story short we were up a creek.

Well - Chan has done better in many aspects over time, tantrums are far and few between, melt downs are not as severe as they once were, he has started to socialize and has a few friends (2 to be exact but they are 5), his speech is far better than ever before, he learned to read last year and is counting triple digit numbers so from a parents perspective we have jumped many of hurdles and are miles further than I would have dreamed of being.

Still 18 months after marriage I am having a hard time having discussions with Paul about Chandler's disability and maybe I am an over protective mother but I am frustrated because sometimes I feel as people want me to pretend that the PDD NOS isn't there... anyhow just frustrated about sometime feeling alone in trying to find ways to make Chandler feel as normal as possible - and to encourage age appropriate friendships.

Anyhow if interested about more info - I have copied info from a web page and pasted it along with the link below - any advise would be gratefully appreciated.

Information provided by: http://www.autismspeaks.org/navigating/pdd_nos.php
PDD-NOS
What it Is Pervasive Developmental Disorder -
Not Otherwise Specified, or PDD-NOS, for short, is a condition on the spectrum that has those with it exhibiting some, but not all, of the symptoms associated with classic autism. That can include difficulty socializing with others, repetitive behaviors, and heightened sensitivities to certain stimuli.

How it's similar to classic autism
Those with PDD-NOS behave like those with classic autism in many ways. First, they are all different (meaning one person with PDD-NOS doesn't act exactly like another; the same holds true for classic autism). When interacting with others, they may appear unemotional or unable to speak, they could have trouble holding eye contact, or they may have trouble transitioning quickly from one activity to the next.

How diagnosis differs
Those with PDD-NOS are different from others on the spectrum in one specific way: While they may exhibit some symptoms of those conditions, they don't fit the bill closely enough to fully satisfy all criteria set by the experts. Perhaps they started having difficulties at a much later age than others on the spectrum. (According to the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities, they are often diagnosed between the ages of 3 and 4 years old.) Or they may have the same challenges — for example, they may be oversensitive to their surroundings — but not to the extreme that others on the spectrum do.

Consequently, those with PDD-NOS are sometimes thought to have a "milder" form of autism, though this may not be technically true. One symptom may be minor, while another may be worse.

What To Do About It Treatments
According to the Yale Developmental Disabilities Clinic, treating children with PDD-NOS could prove tricky: Sometimes, they may not get the help they need as quickly as those whose behavioral patterns are more clearly definable as autistic. Healthcare providers may not provide a diagnosis of PDD-NOS until after they've considered all the other "types" of autism; in short, they may arrive at their conclusion after essentially a process of elimination. As with other conditions, it takes a village of doctors, psychologists, teachers, therapists, and family members to arrive at an action plan that would work best for someone with PDD-NOS. A "one-size-fits-all" approach usually doesn't work: A multi-pronged regimen may be the most advisable. These treatments could include:
*Various behavioral regimens, including play therapy,
*Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), sensory integration therapy, and more
*Medications, including anti-depressants
*Social skills training, which teaches children how to interact with their peers for
specific situations
*Alternative therapies such as martial arts therapy, wherein they flex their muscles literally and figuratively (they get stronger and learn how to function in a group setting); music therapy, which has kids learning how to communicate with the help of songs; or facilitated communication, in which children are taught to use computers or other equipment to make their thoughts known, especially if they have trouble expressing themselves verbally. (It supposedly is helpful to some children with PDD-NOS, says the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities.)

How to Cope
Like other parents with children on the spectrum, you will face many challenges, starting with the incomprehension and insensitivity of others unfamiliar with your situation. They may think your child is "misbehaving" and, consequently, deem you a parent unable to "control" him. This may be especially true because PDD-NOS kids don't fit into the more easily identifiable forms of autism spectrum disorders. Ignorance can bring out the worst in others, and sometimes, when they're not privy to your child's issues (or simply don't understand them or won't accept the diagnosis, as happens in some families), they may be more judgmental.

That's why it's important to surround yourselves with friends, family members, teachers and healthcare providers whom you trust. Be sure that the lines of communication with and among them are clear; you will be relying on them through the many ups and downs of life with a PDD-NOS child.

If you're the primary caretaker (meaning you spend the most hours with your child), you'll need to make time for yourself, too. Caring for others can be draining, and you won't be able to give much if you don't replenish your own stores of energy and look after your physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Ask your child's healthcare providers for referrals to support groups so you can meet parents of other children on the spectrum; or go online — many parenting Web sites have bulletin boards for children with special needs, and Autism Speaks has online forums as well.

Structure is helpful for children on the spectrum, so take this into consideration when deciding what events to attend or places to go. Preparation is key, so let your child know what to expect before the situation takes place or they reach their destinations. Consistency also helps, so check in with your healthcare team before starting or stopping a regimen.

As children grow older and become more aware of the limitations that their condition has placed upon them, it may be helpful for them to receive counseling with a therapist trained in dealing with pervasive developmental disorders. As difficult as it is for parents to go through this journey, it's even harder for the children themselves who have to work through their own personal challenges and other people's ignorance as they make their way in the world.

Paul's Work

A very good friend of mine told me she had no clue what was going on with Paul's work - wow! I guess I have really dropped the ball on that one - thanks Tiff!

So Paul is still here in Lehi working away on the same project that 3 years ago he was told would only be 9 months... goodie for me and the kids we have stayed here!! However his company has ever changing plans for Paul.

In January we were told that we would move to Seattle, WA in May08. Then in March they told him that Seattle was off the board and that he would stay here till Sep08 then he would go to some place in New Mexico. Several of our good friends left last year to go to New Mexico and several have recently left to go there... but.... we were told in August that Paul will probably be here in Utah at least through the end of the year and then... he will be off to Phoenix, AZ.

So - long story short Paul and I made the uneasy decision that the kids and I will make Utah our home base. As many know we purchased our home in Eagle Mountain June 2007 at the same time as we were getting married... we are still here! The house has gone on and off the market a couple of times.. we are currently attempting to refi so that we can bring our mortgage payment down so that it will allow us to put more money into savings.

Some days I wonder how my poor husband does with his long hours with hardly any days off but we make the most of it. He isn't too thrilled about leaving us this Spring to work in AZ or which ever state that his work changes his mind to but his career is really big for him just as mine is to me so we together will make it all happen - plus with the state going to 4 days I have more time to go and see him which will be helpful.

All in a days work - Post again soon

Here is a quixk update

So we all know that life, marriage and family is never perfect... I have been gone for so long I had almost forgotten that I started this thing... that was till my friend Tiff started blogging and I realized that I suck at doing this.

Anyhow - life has been busy. We have had a very busy summer and fall bit are welcoming the cooler air and fall season.

Family update: we are still here! Paul's work still has him in Lehi which is good for the home front in a lot of ways. Looks like sometime next spring he will probably move to Arizona for a few years. With the economy scare I think it may be best to stay in Eagle Mountain with the kids so that they have a stable home and I can keep my job for a while. I am still with the state trudging along... slowly.

Chandler has been doing so well in school - I am so darn proud of him! He is adding and subtracting triple digit numbers and is reading almost on level. He has been getting 100% on his spelling tests and simply has amazed me each day!. He started football late in the summer hence my reasoning for never being around. But he has done really well with that too. He plays defensive end and wide receiver positions so that has been pretty exciting and he has handled being in the group with the 21 other players just fine so far. But he misses play time since football takes up 3 nights a week after school then every Saturday morning.

Alexys has also been doing great in school - gosh I can't say enough how proud of my children I am. Alexys has been doing cheerleading for Chandler's football team in addition to her uncle Kam's football team - she has her two outfits and changes between them in between games since they are usually one after the other. She has got so much spirit! As almost always she is doing really great in school - straight A's so far. Little turkey has had to work of $60 to replace her lost cell phone though... she lost it Labor Day Weekend when we went camping at Lagoon for Chan's Birthday... but she only has $10 to go and she will be paid off and can have her new phone!! I know.. she is only almost 11... should she have a phone... but she has except this one time proven to be very responsible so why not. lol

Paul and I have had some rocky patches the last 18 months but have really grown a lot together which has been really nice.

Well.... off to football practice - will try to update and blog more often.

Graduation/Life

Wow, that just seems to sum it all up. Today is the day that I graduate. I never thought that I would make it this far and honestly without Paul I am not sure that I would have. He has really been great this last semester in helping with the kids and taking on additional things in the home to ensure that my studies were top priority. It has been hard but I think it was all worth it.

Updates - we bought a new truck and trailer. Now we have a 5th-wheel toy hauling travel trailer so that we can camp without ruffing it too much. (LOL) We are excited since we are going to take it out for the first time today. Funny - all we know is that we are headed south, other than that there is no plan, no where to be, no time restrictions - honestly Paul and I probably really needed this and today couldn't be a better day.

Recently Paul went with Alexys' class on a field trip to Camp Floyd. Paul was asked to participate and be the group drill sargent and also teach a little of gun safety. Alexys was beaming and proud that her daddy got to be the one in charge. They both had a great time.

Poor Chandler had a boulder roll over his fingers and had several tip fractures (meaning the tips of his fingers were fractured). He was a trooper and sucked it up and went to the school the next day till I decided that we should really have it looked at and found out that his fingers were fractured. Can you say mean mom? I can - I really thought that they were fine till I took the badages off the next day and realized how ugly it looked. What a learning experience. He still loves me so we are good to go!

Well... it has been far too long since I have blogged and updated everyone - sorry - with work and school - life has been crazy. I will post pics of the trailer and truck soon - hopefully I will remember my camera this weekend and post some camping pics too.

Hope all is well with everyone else.

Brooks Family Update

WOW! Can we say whirlwind? Life has been both hectic and crazy yet fun all at the same time. So since we haven't talked to many lately here is what is going on.

Paul is still working like crazy - the plant is now on 24 hour shifts till the project is done - hence my poor husband is working 12-16 hour days right now. He still finds time to make it home on my school nights, complete homework with the kids and still help out around the house - how? I am not quite sure. One day he still envisions finishing the basement and putting in a band room with the bar, lighting and stage of his dreams - the whole family is excited. Yesterday the whole family pulled all of the dead weeds, raked the leaves and turned off all of the outside water to prepare for the winter. He really has grown a lot since we met almost two years ago. He has been an amazingly supportive and understanding husband and father and giving the situation that he was thrown into he will always be my hero. The kids and Paul have built this really amazing bond where Alexys would rather talk to dad than me. Let just say he over works, he cooks, he cleans, does homework with the kids and still makes time to help me study for my courses - some days I wonder how I found him and why it wasn't sooner.

Alexys and Chandler - those poor kids. We started of the school year pretty rocky with a new school that didn't have the same educational goals for our children as we did. On Tuesday Alexys and Chandler started a new school, Meadow Elementary - they are Mustangs now and this seems to be a much better fit for the both of them. Sadly they can no longer walk to and from school (which I am sure that they will appreciate come winter) and instead they ride "short" bus - no jokes about it around them - it is a sore subject.

Alexys' new teacher is Miss Hooker - Alexys loves her new school and her new 4th grade class. She now wants to earn money to start Karate with the neighbor girls. Since we have moved out here she has made a whole new slue of friends and often is gone playing with someone or having a sleep over at grandma's. We don't know what we would do without my mom lately as she has take the kids a lot! Alexys is happy as can be and can't wait to turn 10 in December - something about the double digits scares me.

Chandler's new teacher is Miss Franson, he has been moved to a small group teaching unit and after only two days has fit right in with his classmates and is doing well. We were blessed when we found Chandler's tutor Mary who comes to our home a couple of days a week to tutor him on his reading, writing and spelling. In just a couple of short months he has excelled so much, he is really starting to catch on. He is 8 and in 2nd grade this year and while still behind on reading and writing is excelling and interested in math - Paul and I really believe that he will do well. Poor kid has had overtime on education as he sits with Mary for 2-3 hours a week and then Paul and I also supplement his education with 6-8 hours of home reading, writing, spelling and math but he has done well with it.

I am still at my same old job with DWS attempting to save the world - all the while trying really hard to get through this semester of college. Anatomy & Physiology has been killing me. I really have enjoyed my Social Work class lately and am sure that this is the field I want to pursue for my adult career one day. Work has been hectic - we recently were all moved to new teams with new supervisors and cases. I have determined that I don't mind helping my new 300+ customers however I really liked and miss my old caseload of 300 customers - it is hard after building a bond with customers for two years trading caseloads with someone else. I guess I need to be positive and look at it as I have the opportunity to make a difference in my new customers lives just like I did with the others. But still... GRRR! LOL

All in all our family is still doing quite well, we have all had our ups and downs but that is also what keeps us all on our toes. We are planning and hoping to spend the Thanksgiving holidays with the Brooks Family in Richland, Oregon. The kids are begging for snow so they can go sledding. We are planning to have our first Christmas married in our new home this year - so that will be really exciting - now we will have to see if we can find time for Paul to hang the Christmas lights or put up the tree with his new work schedule.

We miss our family and friends and hope that they all understand that we have not forgotten them but have been building a family and a home. Time has just blown right by us. We wish everyone well and if we don't have a chance to see you have a safe and happy holiday season!!

one semester and 10 credits to go

I am super stoked - today I was doing a degree evaluation online and found out that after this semester that I only have 10 credits to go and then I can graduate with my AS in May!!! I knew that I had been going to school for a while - honestley I started Fall Semester 2005 and will finish Spring of 2008 but I was going part time for my first year and a half - I never thought that I would see the light at the end of the tunnel however today I have.

So here is my new game plan -
May 2008 graduate from SLCC with an AS in General Studies
May 2009 graduate from SLCC with an AA in Spanish and Social Work
and sometime between here and there I need to figure out which University I am going to go to so that I can continue on and get my BS & BA in Social Work & Spanish.

I am excited - school really is going to pay off - By 2010 I can go for my LCSW and work for a clinic to help young families and children in need - all my my life, career and educational goals are starting to pay off figuratiely not financially because I am simply not in it for the money.

Off to study -

Saturday was Fishing

Saturday was fishing for the boys. We all woke up really early, Chandler was dressed and ready to go fishing with his dad! I fixed Chandler some breakfast and made both Paul and Chandler lunches with plenty of snacks. They took off headed to Strawberry Res. about six in the morning.

On the other hand, I enjoyed an empty house since Alexys was at my moms and Chandler and Paul were fishing. I watch some girly moview on Lifetime Moview Network, then I completed a couple of my homework assignments, then I was off to get pampered. I was really just going to get my nails filled however ended up getting a pedicure too. I felt really revived.

Okay so back to fishing, the boys came home early; about four. Paul said that he caught and released a couple of rainbow trout that were about 20 inches long, Chandler on the other hand decided that he was bored of fishing off of the boat and decided that he wanted to be the fish catcher and use the net to help Paul and his boss get the fish onto the boat. Chandler came home wet so I wondered if he had fallen off of the boat, Paul said that he let him jump in after they were all done, not from the boat though - he played in the water from the shore. I was shocked that Paul let Chandler ride home on his leather seats all wet but it sounds like they had some real good father son bonding time!!!

Chandler's 8th Birthday

Today was Chandler's 8th Birthday! I can't believe how big he has grown and how quick. Chandler is in second grade, a little behind however really coming along. He woke up this morning and said mom where's my case. I told him that he had his cake when we had his birthday part with his friends however that we were going to have ice cream and sing to him. He was content with this and went to school.

Today Chandler came home from school with a large purple envelope. Inside were birthday cards that all of his class mates had made for him today while in school. Chandler and I sat down and went through all of these. Several had pictures, several were from boys in his class saying how cool he was however half of them were from girls in his class that said that they really liked him and think he is cute. I thought that this was just the cutest thing ever.

Tonight we had Chinese Food for dinner as Chandler got to pick his favorite food for us to have. Unfortunately he had to do homework after dinner and before ice cream however still he was very content. Paul gave him a Play Station for his birthday and I really think that his made his day!

It is hard to believe that just eight years ago that this little man came into my world - tears... I remember those days and miss them dearly - I am glad that I am in a position that I have more time at home to really enjoy the rest of these years as my children grow up; and to think that each year that they grow I do too.

Saturday

Today Paul and I took Chandler to the Ranches to hit a bucket of balls. I attempted and missed quite a few shots. I also ended up getting some icky blisters on my thumbs - GRRR!

We also went to out Hakala Family Reunion - it was nice to see family members from my mom's side that I haven't seen in a while and I finally got them their thank you notes from the wedding gifts that they gave us. Found out that my brother Kam won his game today 37-0, I am so proud of him! Alexys was on the side lines cheering her little heart out and sending around the touch down can. Mom decided to take Alexys over night, then Grandma said that she wanted to take Chandler - bonus for Paul and me!!

Paul and I went to Best Buy and bought me a new PC for home/school so as my old was was becoming a dinosour or at least runnng like one.

All in all we had a pretty good weekend!!

My Class was GREAT!!!

Last night I went to my first class with SLCC. I am majoring in Social Work; last night was my first of my social work classes and was exciting. I was worried that the teacher would not be able to keep my interest and that I would be skipping classes since my class is on the Redwood Campus which is over an hour away. HOWEVER - I loved the class - the teacher is awesome and I will be making sure that I do not miss any of my classes -

Apparently being optimistic is imperative.

Happy trails to a new semester of classes.
